Internet Privacy and Kids The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) was passed 20 years ago. While its original intentions still hold up pretty well on today’s internet, there are still plenty of things for parents to be concerned about with their kids online. Things like cyber bullying, internet-based predators, data theft and downright disturbing content that can find its way onto your kid’s devices. What to do? COPPA requires websites to explain privacy policies and requires parental consent before collecting personal information from children younger than 13 years old. However, relying on the good behavior of websites…and games kids can download…can leave children open to danger—not just on the internet, but in the real world as well. Kidshealth.org has a very helpful article that reminds us that while the internet can be a wonderful place for our children, it comes with some very real risks.
